Wildebeest Migration In Masai Mara
The Great Migration as it is known is the movement of a million plus wildebeest
from Serengeti in Tanzania northwards into the adjoining Masai Mara Reserve in
Kenya. It is one of the world’s most spectacular and thrilling display of wildlife
behavior. The migration takes place every year with the animals primal instincts
guiding them towards greener pastures following the climatic rain fall patterns
over the Serengeti-Maasai Mara eco system. For the 2024 and 2025 seasons we
recommend planning your travel July to September, as this is when the migration
typically is on proper with the larger herds of wildebeest starting the move into
Masai Mara. The migration takes place till end of August, before declining into
mid-September.

This circular movement of millions of wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, and other
grazers occur between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara
Game Reserve every year.
Scientists cannot precisely tell how the wildebeests know when it is time to
migrate or how they know the way. One plausible explanation is that they follow
the rain’s scent, which in itself is quite fascinating.

The Great Wildebeest Migration
One of the most sought-after experiences for wildlife and nature enthusiasts, the Great Migration is the ever-moving circular migration of over a million animals across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The constant movement of columns of wildebeest, joined by a host of companions, follow an age-old route in search of grazing and water. After calving in the southern part of Tanzania’s Serengeti near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the animals journey through the Serengeti up and around in a clockwise direction towards the Masai Mara in Kenya, before returning once again near the end of the year. Along the way, high drama is always present, as thousands of animals are taken by predators and thousands more are born, replenishing the numbers and sustaining the circle of life.

Experience the Migration Season in Maasai Mara and Naboisho
The great wildebeest migration is one of the most phenomenal natural spectacles
in the world. Contrary to popular belief; the Wildebeest Migration is in fact an
all year-round event; with each time of the year offering a unique wildlife
viewing experience. The migration encompasses about 2 million wildebeests, quarter
a million zebras and half a million gazelles including the other plains game.
The migration is an endless pilgrimage in constant search for food and water. The
movement is trailed by predators including lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena.
Each year around the same time, the circular great migration begins in the Ngorongoro
Conservation area in the Southern Serengeti of Tanzania and loops in a clockwise
direction through the Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.
Between December to March the herds are situated in Ndutu area and East of Seronera
area within the Serengeti in Tanzania. During February, the Wildebeests are situated
on the short grass plains on the South Eastern part of the Serengeti eco-system. It
is here they give birth to about half a million calves within a 2-to-3-week period.
During April the rains end and the herds move Northwards for fresh pasture and onto
areas around Grumeti River and remain here up to the end of June. By now calves born
in February are 4 months old and are strong enough to trek across the plains.
May is the mating season; they breed at the same time ensuring that the calving season
will happen at the same time in February the following year.
During July to October the herds are at Masai Mara. It is here they mow down the long
grass making it palatable to short grass eaters. The Mara River bisects the Savannah
forming a formidable obstacle to cross especially for the older, weaker and the very
young. Predators lie in wait, making this a game viewing spectacle.
During November the herds head South to Serengeti from Masai Mara through the Lobo
area reaching the Southern Serengeti during December. By year’s end the herd is at
Ndutu in Southern Serengeti ready to begin the whole process again.
