LEMOSHO 8 DAYS CLIMB
8-day private camping trekking tour + 2 nights’ hotel stay

The Lemosho route is traditionally one of the quieter and lesser-known routes on the mountain. It’s also the newest and probably the most diverse in terms of the ecological systems and landscapes it passes through. The first two days of this route take you through lush rainforest before you emerge into heath and moorland then join the Machame Route on the third day. This narrow trail, which begins on the Western side of Kilimanjaro, has some very steep and undulating sections. Hikers overnight in tents.

Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via The Lemosho Route

As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.

After beautiful forests and moorlands, it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.

Lemosho Route: The Lemosho Route is our favorite Kilimanjaro climbing route. Why wouldn’t the Lemosho be our favorite route? It is most definitely the most scenic and diverse one, it has one of the newer and thus fresher trails and it is perfect for acclimatization. Acclimatization is the word you see over and over again when researching the climbing routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. When you have found the Lemosho Route, there’s no need to worry too much about acclimatization anymore.

The Lemosho route avoids the crowds on the early part of the Machame route and over 8 days, you have a fantastic journey and a great chance of summiting successfully.

The climb begins at Londorossi Gate, at an altitude of 2360 metres, with an approach far to the west of the mountain. It passes through majestic rainforest where some of the region’s most unique wildlife can often be seen. The route continues up to the mountain’s third summit at Shira Ridge.

We offer an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb using the Lemosho route. Both offer good acclimatization and wonderful views en-route. This route has a beautiful approach through the forest on the first day through the Lemosho Glades from the west before joining the Machame trail at the Shira Plateau and contouring around the dramatic southern flank of the mountain via Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp and then on to Barafu camp for the summit push. The descent is via Millennium Camp and through Mweka Gate.
