scenic Chogoria Route with the circumnavigation of the two main peaks of Mount Kenya and
then abseil to Batian & Nelion peaks at approx. 5200 metres above sea level.

7 Days Mt Kenya Rock Climbing: Nelion Peak

Nelion is the Second highest summit on Mount Kenya at 5,188m (17021ft). The south east side normal route tackling Nelion peak it is in condition from December – Mid March from Austrian Hut base camp at 4,790m.

The rocks hold granite rock which runs vertically and horizontally with weathered fissures, but they offer good holds and friction. Helmets are recommended. Although the guide leads, it is important to have good belaying skills when following and be familiar with all types of belay devices. Controlling the risks and hazards relies highly on your skills and experience as well of those of the guide.

Climbing Nelion peak normal route takes 2-3 days which are additional from the normal hiking itineraries from base camps. Adding more days is possible regarding that the weather changes.

This route is about 400 meters vertical and don’t follow a direct line. Much of climbing on this route is not above Grade III. This climb is completed in one long day in a series of up to 18 solo pitches with longest pitches around 50-60 meters. Well acclimatized and fit climbers climb swiftly and reach the summit of Nelion in about 8 hours. It is possible for them to cross the Gate of Mists [Grade IV] to Batian peak in another 3 hours, though sometimes is difficult because of snow or ice while on transverse. Making a bivouac on the summit of Nelion at Howell’s hut is possible and decent next day. Equipping with you ice axe and crampons are recommended.

Day 1: Nairobi- Sirimon-Old Moses

You have the morning link up with our representative either at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport or at your Nairobi Hotel. Depart on a 3 hour drive to Nanyuki Town, where you meet your Mount Kenya climbing crew. They conduct a gear check to ensure you have all the necessary equipment to undertake the climb. Soon thereafter, you depart for the Sirimon Gate of Mount Kenya, where you take your packed lunch and commence the trek. Follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction and gain an elevation of 690 metres. Arrival at Old Moses Camp (3,300 metres). Overnight at the Camp. Half board

Day 2: Old Moses- Shipton's

Breakfast. Take one hour trek to reach the fork. The track becomes a path and swings right and south round the head of a large valley crossing several small streams to reach the crest of the ridge between Ontulili and Likii North Valleys. Trek on to the West side of the valley over a ridge, then down into the Mackinder's Valley. The trek takes 5 hours today. Take the direct route to the Shiptons Camp ( 4,200 metres). Dinner and overnight at Shiptons Camp. Full board

Day 3: Shipton's- Austrian Hut

This is an acclimatization day with a morning trek round the peak via Simba Col and onto the Austrian Hut ( 4,790 metres) for overnight. Full board

Day 4: Austrian- Lenana Peak- Austrian Hut

Wake up at 2 am have some tea and biscuits and depart for Point Lenana ( 4985 metres), this is the 3rd highest peak on Mount Kenya. This section is long, hard slog and the path is indistinct in places, continue walking across tough screen until you reach Harris Tarn, continue to the North Face of Point Lenana, reaching the summit at sunrise. Enjoy the views here and take some photos. Descend to the Austrian Hut ( 4,790 metres), your base for climbing the Nelion Peak. Dinner and overnight at Austrian Hut. Full board

Day 5: Austrian- Nelion- Batian Peak- Howell Hut

Wake up at 4 am and have some tea and biscuits. Take the 2 hour trek to cross the Lewis Glacier and up to the Base of Nelion. Embark on the 6-hour rock-climbing expedition to Nelion Peak ( 5188 metres). Traverse the gate of mist to Batian Peak (5199 metres); the highest peak on Mount Kenya. Climb back to the Nelion Peak. Dinner and overnight at Ian Howell Hut ( 5,100 metres). Full board

Day 6: Howell Hut- Meru Bandas

Abseil down to the bottom about 9 ropes, 50 metres and then walk to the Austrian Hut ( 4,790 metres) for Breakfast. Take the descent through the Chogoria route to the Meru Bandas ( 2, 950 metres) for dinner and overnight. Fullboard

Day 7: Meru Bandas- Chogoria-Nairobi

Breakfast. Trek through Bamboo and indigenous forest to catch your 4 X 4 transfer vehicle to Chogoria village, where you catch your transfer vehicle to Nairobi. Arrival Nairobi in the late afternoon and are dropped off either at your Nairobi Hotel or at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. Breakfast and lunch
