CKC Safaris offers balloon flights in Kenya’s famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The Mara is the northernmost part of the spectacular Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, home to the “Great Migration” and scores of other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, hippos, and crocodiles.
Maasai Mara and Serengeti: Hot Air Balloon Safari & Champagne Breakfast
You are woken up at early hours from at your safari lodge or tented camp as the
wildlife viewing from an elevated position stirs your mind. You are served some
coffee or tea to awaken you up. On arrival at the ‘balloon launch site’ you may
see the balloon also known as ‘an envelope’ being inflated. The ground crew
operate the envelope by laying it on the ground. Typically, a staff force of
between 20 to 25 people are at the launch and recovery operations.
A large fan is used to inflate the envelope partially. When the envelope is about
half-full, the crew attaches the basket and the burner. The basket remains fully
secured to the ground during inflation. The burner is used to inflate the envelope
fully.
At dawn you take off, rising as the sun rises and float in whichever direction the
winds of the morning take you. A gentle ascent takes you well above the tree-top level
and the whispering light breeze soothes the hearts as you enjoy a panoramic view of the
wildlife drama unequaled anywhere in the wild world. Soar high over the Savannah plains
while the wildlife roams wild and free beneath you. The balloon floats silently above it
all; ‘like a dream come true’. The balloon pilot controls the altitude of the balloon;
offering you a unique perspective and great photographic opportunities. At other times,
the pilot will ascend high to enable you to see and appreciate the enormity and wonderful
panorama of the plains below.
At other times the pilot must put more heat into the balloon using the powerful whisper
burners. In between these burns, is silence apart from the natural sounds below. For safety
and comfort, the sides of the balloon baskets are relatively high and well paddled. There
are well cushioned and secure handles made of rope for use during takeoff and landing.
The balloon flight takes about one hour. Upon landing you celebrate with Champagne, before
sitting down to a full English breakfast prepared and served in the bush in ‘Out of Africa
style’. Later, you receive your balloon flight certificate and are then driven back to your
safari lodge or tented camp.
The Hot air balloon flights need to be pre-arranged with us to ensure guaranteed availability
due to limited space of only 16 passengers in a balloon. Children are accommodated in the
balloon but must be at least 4 years old and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
